We present a dare for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of the horror genre: Sit down with your significant other and view Together. This 2025 indie hit just made its online premiere on Hulu. On the surface, it might appear like conventional biological terror, but beneath Together lies a deep meditation about how we choose to love each other.
An Introductory Film Investigating Relationship Dynamics
Together represents the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for over ten years. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, the two stars bring a unique chemistry to their characters, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.
The narrative starts when the couple move from the metropolis to the rural area for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical story element, sure, but that’s largely where the cliches cease. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.
A Paranormal Spark
While hiking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists discover an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence starts to affect the couple. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.
The complete narrative is a methodically building fright fest, weaving in elements of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes during something grotesque). The director orchestrates these parts expertly and presents them in a consistently growing aura of dread.
Layered Performances
A great deal of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.
Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and far away from his support system. He is terrified of the idea of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for getting around.
Shanks’ smartest move is that he refrains from painting one partner or the other the obvious villain.
Both characters confront the kind of problems that come with long-term unions after ten years. At their core, they continue to care for one another. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their relationship.
Thematic Depth
While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of excessive reliance and fully committing to a partner, the metaphor does not come across as overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights work together in harmony.
A Divisive Ending
Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.
Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could act as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the ending inspire anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your partner and state, “We could get through that together”?
Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can embark on today.
Together is streaming on Hulu at present.
